John 1:1-5

Gospel of John - Good News

In The Beginning - John wants us to consider life from the perspective of the new creation, a new creation that is brought by the word, and that perspective is undeniably optimistic. John says in verse 5 that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. Just like on day one of the old creation, when light pierced the darkness, so also in the new creation, God’s light, the light of life and salvation, pierces the spiritual darkness that covers our hearts and the world around us. John says this light is eternally victorious, from the beginning to the end this light wins. John 1:1-5.

The New Year is a great time to revisit the story of Jesus, because our hope for the future is only as secure as our grounding in the person and work of Christ for us. Even though this Gospel isn’t about us, it is for us—Jesus is the Word who is life, and that life is the light of all men. No matter what future you are staring down this New Year, I want you to have the unshakable confidence that the Word which spoke life into being holds your life in his hands and the darkness will not overcome it.
