Arts on Alexander will be hosting a national traveling art exhibit called “Revealed,” open to the public from Sunday, October 31, to Thursday, November 18. The exhibit is made available through CIVA | Christians in the Visual Arts. This exhibition is in cooperation with Redeemer, and will be displayed in the second-floor hallway of Calvin Hall (the School of Discipleship and church offices building) and in Room 206.
An opening reception will be held Sunday October 31, at 1:30 pm with light refreshments. The exhibit will also be open to the public as outlined below.
Redeemer, and now AoA, has long displayed prints from the superb Perry Collection in the narthex during Advent/Christmas and Eastertide, but this is the first external, professional exhibit we have undertaken.
“Revealed” features twenty-three original artworks, from the new book Revealed: A Storybook Bible for Grown-Ups. This collection of contemporary works includes various printmaking techniques and covers the entire story of redemption from the fall in Genesis through the new creation promised in Revelation. These artworks are their creators’ visual interpretations of the Biblical stories addressed; those interpretations may not be what one traditionally expects.
Note that the exhibit subtitle is “A Storybook Bible for Grown-Ups.” That is not to say that these images are not appropriate for younger folks, but that the interpretation is intended for a fully formed mind and aesthetic sense. AoA has chosen, in conjunction with the pastoral staff, to exhibit certain images that perhaps might be disturbing to children (think Jael and the tent stake) in Room 206, and encourage parents to use their discretion in making exhibit viewing choices for their individual family.
Please sign the guest book at the top of the stairs! Such a record helps AoA document public engagement with activities (and for these purposes Redeemer folks are part of the “public”).
