1. Our pastors are returning to the book of Genesis for our sermons this fall. What do you remember from previous sermons about the book of Genesis? Who are some of the main characters? What has happened between Genesis 1 (Fall 2016) and Genesis 35 (Fall 2019)?
2. Much of Genesis is taken up with the story of Abraham’s family. In this new section of Genesis, we are introduced to Jacob’s 12 sons. Can you memorize the names of the 12 sons of Jacob? How many mothers did they have?
3. Although each son of Jacob plays a part in the story of Genesis, Joseph emerges as a main character. What kind of personality does Joseph have? Is he liked by his brothers?
4. This section of Genesis includes stories of God’s people doing bad things and stories of bad things happening to God’s people. Is God still in control when bad things happen? Do you think God can use bad things to accomplish his will? What kind of prayers should we pray when bad things are happening around us?
5. Toward the end of the section of Genesis we will study this fall, Joseph goes from being a prisoner to being “governor over all the land.” How does God use Joseph in this place of prominence and power? What do you think God wants us to do with the opportunities we have for service and leadership?
