2 Timothy 2:1-7

2 Timothy: Enduring for the Gospel

C. S. Lewis says that if you are looking to be comfortable, Christianity is not the religion for you. Christianity is a religion of denying oneself (Matt.16:24), of being crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:6), and carrying our cross as we follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). Why would anyone be a Christian if all we have to look forward to is suffering and discomfort? The only real way to answer this question is if suffering and misery do not have the final say over us. In Christianity, we find the ultimate meaning and purpose for the troubles we face in this life because there is one who faced those same troubles for us. Only when we see Jesus are we able to see the meaning of suffering. In the second chapter of 2 Timothy, we see that the way to glory is first through the cross, where God not only gives us the meaning of suffering but shows us the ultimate fruit it bears. We see that the Christian life is learning to suffer for the sake of Christ’s gospel and seeing the fruit being produced within us by great trials.

What would you say to someone you loved about your legacy and how to carry on that legacy as you lay on your deathbed? Paul’s second letter to his spiritual son, mentee, and protégé Timothy is a window into how Paul answers this question.
