Genesis 9:18-29
We Are Noah - I’ve been searching in vain this week for stories about drunk, naked Noah and his leering son in the children’s Bibles we own, but there it is in black and white in Genesis 9. Why is this strange story, this terrible sequel to Noah’s story of faithful obedience, in the Bible? Can we learn anything from it at all? What I hope to show you this Sunday as we conclude the story of Noah is that we are all Noah: we bring shame and scandal on ourselves by our own sin. What we often get in return (and give to others who sin) is found in the actions of Ham, who shames and humiliates his father even further. What we need (and so often fail to give others who sin) is illustrated for us in the actions of Shem and Japheth who cover their father’s sin. Ultimately this story is about how God covers you and me—sinners in need of grace—with the love of Jesus who became a curse for us and was exposed on the cross for all the world to see. Genesis 9:18-29.
