CloseSeventy-nine years ago this month, Winston Churchill spoke these famous words: “Now is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” After a series of humiliating defeats, the British had finally secured a victory over the Nazis in North Africa and there was a sense that perhaps the tide of the war was beginning to turn. But the war itself was far from over. In the same way, we will reach a conclusion this Sunday that is not really the end. God’s people (Jacob’s family) are out of place (in Egypt, not the Promised Land), enjoying the blessings of a benevolent Pharaoh but still waiting for the Redeemer who had been promised so long ago. These final verses point our eyes forward to the seed of the woman and are the perfect bridge to our celebration of Advent in the weeks to come as we remember the first coming of Christ as an infant and anticipate his second coming as a conquering king.
