Mark 1:35-39

Seeing Jesus: Gospel of Mark

Jesus has just concluded a long day of ministry. It began with him teaching in the synagogue of Capernaum and it ended with his staying up late into the evening healing people outside Peter’s house. But instead of sleeping in and taking a day off, Jesus begins the new day before sunrise with prayer. Jesus prays often in the Gospels, but we don’t always know what he prays about. In this instance, however, we have a good idea because he expresses clarity and direction for his future ministry. This week, we turn to Mark 1:35-39 to get a picture of the ministry of Jesus—a ministry that he still enacts for you and me today.

From Series: "Seeing Jesus: Gospel of Mark"

The Gospel of Mark is known for its quick pace. Jesus, as Mark tells it, does everything “immediately.” The picture of Jesus we get from Mark isn’t of a languid guru, but of a man on a mission. As we return to our spring sermon series in the Gospel of Mark, we’ll give special attention to the picture of Jesus Mark is conveying to his readers. For in Jesus, God’s king and God’s kingdom has come…and nothing can ever be the same again.
