1 Samuel 8:1-5

The Gospel According to Samuel

We return to the story of Samuel this Sunday and are confronted right away with a "déjà vu" moment. The religious leader of Israel is old. He has appointed his sons to follow after him, but they are corrupt. Haven’t we heard this story before? Why does Israel (and you and me) find ourselves in this cyclical pattern of sin and unfaithfulness? Can we ever break free of the natural tendency of things to fall apart? When will we see the promise of Psalm 145:4, "One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts”? That’s this Sunday as we turn to 1 Samuel 8.

From Series: "The Gospel According to Samuel"

This week, we begin a new sermon series in the Old Testament book of First Samuel. Eventually, we will hear the stories of King David and Solomon, the building of the Temple, and the glory of Israel under God’s blessing in the land of promise. But we begin during the time of the Judges when “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
