Following Jesus When It Is Unpopular - In John 6, Jesus proclaims one of his “hard sayings” that caused quite a stir amongst his disciples. Jesus preached, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” These words became a “scandal” and an “offense” to many of his listeners, separating the false disciples from those who were truly his disciples. Many of Jesus’ followers “grumbled” amongst themselves about these words, and eventually they determined to depart from Jesus altogether. Ultimately, “the twelve” had to come to grips with their own loyalty to Jesus—would they depart from him now that he was unpopular, or would they remain faithful in following him regardless of his lack of popularity? This Sunday, we will see how the Apostle Peter’s confession of faith sets the standard for true Christian discipleship—there simply is no other option for the one who believes and trusts in the Savior. John 6: 60-71.
The New Year is a great time to revisit the story of Jesus, because our hope for the future is only as secure as our grounding in the person and work of Christ for us. Even though this Gospel isn’t about us, it is for us—Jesus is the Word who is life, and that life is the light of all men. No matter what future you are staring down this New Year, I want you to have the unshakable confidence that the Word which spoke life into being holds your life in his hands and the darkness will not overcome it.
