Psalm 95

Season of Pentecost

As we break for the week between our Fall and Advent sermon series, we open the Psalms, Israel’s prayer and hymnbook. Psalm 95 identifies us with Israel’s journey through the Sinai wilderness. The trial and burden of this life leave us wayfaring strangers hardened to the creator and sustainer of the universe. But there is also a promise. Today, if we listen to his voice and hear him, we can still lay hold of the covenant-keeping God because he has laid hold of us. When he is put on trial, God stands in the dock in the place of the guilty. The innocent exchange fates with the guilty by absorbing the judgment rendered by hard-hearted people. This is the Christian gospel: God standing in the dock to absorb humanity's verdict. It is what Luther called the great exchange: his death for our life, our condemnation for his acquittal, our shame for his honor. Psalm 95 is meant to lead us to sing together, “Come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!”
