For the last several years, Redeemer has been able to provide free counseling to our members and regular attenders. The counseling has been offered by Redeemer staff counselors, Elizabeth Brisola and Sarah Ryburn Mealer. We give thanks to God for their training and availability. We also recognize, however, that we have been limited in the kind of counseling our staff counselors can offer. Although gifted, they are not omnicompetent! We also recognize that some men would prefer to see a male counselor rather than a female counselor.
As we have prayed and thought about these challenges, the Lord opened a door for Redeemer to collaborate with a Christian counseling practice based in Dallas, Watershed Initiative. Watershed has partnered with other churches in Dallas and Houston to expand their counseling ministries. We are pleased to announce that we are also collaborating with Watershed to provide a full spectrum of counseling to Redeemer members, attenders, and people from our neighborhood. The new counseling center is housed in one of the homes across the street from Redeemer where we recently undertook several weeks of remodeling to create counseling offices and a waiting room.
Our prayer is that Jesus would use this new counseling ministry as a ministry of mercy not just for our members and attenders but also for the many new people who are moving into our neighborhood. Unlike previous generations of residents, our new neighbors rarely need financial assistance. Instead, they need the wisdom, skill, and experience of qualified Christian counselors to help them navigate the challenges of modern life. Together with Watershed, we hope to provide that hope to our neighbors.
Redeemer members and visitors will still qualify for subsidized counseling. Instead of five free sessions, our agreement with Watershed has been updated so that we provide a 20% discount to anyone from Redeemer who seeks counseling at our new counseling center. Those who qualify can receive greater discounts based on financial need. (Different arrangements apply for those who are using insurance.)
