Genesis 36:1-43

God\'s Unseen Hand

God’s Grace to Esau - Before the Genesis narrative turns to focus on its final main character—Jacob’s son, Joseph—we are given an extended look at Esau’s family and future. This long chapter is filled with hard to pronounce names, obscure references to tribal chiefs, and a list of kings who reigned in Edom “before any king reigned over the Israelites” (v36). What purpose can such a text have? Why is it included in our Bibles? Why do we need to spend any time on it at all? Since "all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching" (2 Tim 3:16), we should approach even chapters like Genesis 36 with a sense of expectation. Join us this Sunday as we learn about God’s grace to Esau and the difference it makes to you and me.

As we return this fall to Genesis, we’ll be talking about how God works in and through the sinful actions of the characters in this section of the book to accomplish his will.
