John 6: 16 - 21

Gospel of John - Good News

Jesus Walks On The Water - After Jesus retreats from the crowd that would make him King of Bread, he sends the disciples back across the Sea of Galilee. The journey back for the disciples is not easy: the wind and the waves prevent them from making much progress. Then, in the middle of the night, they see Jesus walking on the water. His appearance isn’t reassuring. The disciples are afraid. This week, we turn to this well-known story from John 6 to try to understand what it is about Jesus that is both comforting and frightening, and why both of those emotions are appropriate—even necessary—for those who worship him. John 6: 16 - 21.

The New Year is a great time to revisit the story of Jesus, because our hope for the future is only as secure as our grounding in the person and work of Christ for us. Even though this Gospel isn’t about us, it is for us—Jesus is the Word who is life, and that life is the light of all men. No matter what future you are staring down this New Year, I want you to have the unshakable confidence that the Word which spoke life into being holds your life in his hands and the darkness will not overcome it.
