The Battle of Mount Carmel - This week, we begin a two-week sermon series on the life and ministry of Elijah in anticipation of hearing Redeemer’s choir sing Felix Mendelssohn’s famous oratorio about the prophet. This Sunday, we’ll consider together the battle on Mount Carmel between Elijah and the prophets of Baal. This is one of those stories that makes us feel very distant from the world of the Bible: idol worshippers, pagan priests, calling down fire from heaven—what can any of this mean for modern Christians? Even though we often get distracted by the spectacle in this story, the real action happens within the hearts of the Israelites who are being reconstituted as a nation under God’s rule and blessing. Join us this Sunday as we discover where the real battle lines are drawn—on Mount Carmel and in our own hearts.
